NFL-sized mismatch: John Urschel vs. the Wonderlic Test

John Urschel will be the first Penn State player to work out for teams at this weekend’s NFL Scouting Combine.

Of course, he was a media focus almost as soon as he arrived in Indianapolis Thursday because of his stunning academic talents — which, of course, still seem to overshadow his abilities on the field.

John Urschel likely will post one of the highest Wonderlic Test scores at the NFL Combine.

John Urschel likely will post one of the highest Wonderlic Test scores at the NFL Combine.

He’s not only the first Nittany Lion to win the prestigious Campbell Trophy (known as the academic Heisman), not only did he teach integral vector calculus during his senior season … he also recently proved his own theorem, which has been accepted by the top journal in spectral graph theory.

Now, comes the intense football prodding, evaluating and analyzing through Tuesday.

Urschel’s on-field workout for the scouts is Saturday, followed by All-America receiver Allen Robinson on Sunday and defensive tackle DaQuan Jones on Monday. The NFL Network will have coverage of the workouts each day at 9 a.m.

All three players earned first-team All-Big Ten honors last fall.

And while each figures to perform well for the scouts, only one of them is considered a math genius. Urschel’s academic exploits have been well documented, from his 4.0 grade point average, to earning two master’s degrees in math.

So, if anyone at the combine should ace the always-hyped Wonderlic Cognitive Ability Test … it should be Urschel.

The Wonderlic is a 50-question, 12-minute, multiple-choice test intended to not only measure IQ but also quick decision-making.

A perfect score is 50 and anything above 30 is considered good. And while the results seem important to NFL officials before the spring’s draft, they are not pure predictors of future success. Consider that struggling NFL quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick (Harvard grad) had one of the highest Wonderlic scores ever, a 48.

Nevertheless, Urschel should dominate this part of the weekend. I predict a score in the low- to mid-40s — at the least.
